Good lighting is essential, because corals need a lot of light, which they can use for photosynthesis. Skimmers help to reliably remove the metabolic products of fish and other higher animals from the water and thus counteract increased nutrient concentrations. Furthermore, due to the wave-exposed location in their natural habitats, many corals depend on plenty of strong current, which can best be recreated with specialized current pumps.
